• M.D. from Northwestern U. medical school (now Feinberg). Anesthesia internship & residency at U. Wash (Seattle), then research fellowship in biomedical engineering at UCSD (San Diego). Board-certified 1982. After that my career became segmented into 4 discrete periods:
  1981-1986 Asst. Clin. Prof. @ UCSD. Enjoyed learning & teaching but didn't have the temperament for lifelong academic pursuit ...
  1986-1993 Staff anesthesiologist (with a turn as chief) at busy community hospital near San Diego, in the thick of private practice--long hours, challenging cases ...
  1993-2006 Director of OB anesthesia at a quiet community hospital in semi-rural Georgia, under a hospital-subsidized contract. Eventually ran a small physician group providing all the anesthesia services at the facility. My full-time directorship was effectively half-time, allowing me to moonlight as locum tenens at several hospitals around Georgia & Tennessee in the 1990s--a nice mid-career reality check to see what's common vs. different among OR & anesthesia setups ...
  2007-2016 Partner in anesthesiology group in Tacoma WA, where I reside today. In 2007 I also worked as LT at Virginia Mason Clinic in Seattle, and in rural areas of CA & WA ... Retired from full-time practice in 2016, continued working PRN until last case in August 2017...
  
  Lifelong interest in digital electronics & computer programming. In San Diego I developed custom on-call work scheduling software; in GA I developed a custom clinical database (mainly used by CRNAs) to capture data for billing and quality management ...
  Overall it's been an engaging and fulfilling 45-year medical career, with retirement arriving just as I was approaching burn-out! Though I still see medical colleagues, I am now largely withdrawn from the profession.
