  • I am a board-certified neonatologist, working as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Neonatology Division, Emory + Children's Pediatric Institute, since 2014. I had focused my research and service on the study of early emotional, social, and language development in children affected by premature birth. As part of my work, motivated by the high incidence of severe behavioral problems among children affected by prematurity and the limitations in providing specialized behavioral diagnostic and treatment services, in 2015, I created the Behavioral Support Project (BSP), a group of parents, psychologists, neonatologists, obstetricians, social workers, physical therapists and nurses, focussed on the implementation of strategies that support early social and emotional development in neonates affected by prematurity to improve behavioral and developmental outcomes. I am also the chair of the Behavioral Support Conference, an event hosted by the Neonatology Division at Emory University and Children's Health Care of Atlanta, since 2017. This conference brings together close to 100 health care providers and educators from different backgrounds from the Atlanta area and other perinatal centers to discuss behavioral and emotional problems in children born prematurely and to identify strategies to help their families.. Understanding the critical role of the family in improving behavioral and neurodevelopmental outcomes, with the commitment of the NICU personnel at Grady NICU, in 2017, I implemented Let's Read a Book Today, Shared Reading for NICU Babies at Grady Memorial Hospital, an educational program for parents and caregivers of babies admitted to the NICU, about the benefits of reading aloud to infants and small children. This Innovative collaboration with the Atlanta Public Library and Get Georgia Reading, plans to expand the NICU-Public Libraries model to other perinatal centers. I also lead the Colostrum Care Quality Improvement Initiative at NICU Grady.
