    Annette Smith is a Ghanaian-American, who is a Minnesota native. She graduated from the University of Iowa Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) program with a minor in German and university honors. She obtained her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree in psychiatry from Columbia University. In her clinical experience as a PMHNP, she treated patients with psychiatric and medical comorbidities and treated adolescents and adults from vulnerable populations such as those from the LGBTQIA+ community and ethnic minorities. Throughout her experiences as a PMHNP, she worked with multidisciplinary health teams to provide the most effective patient centered care, utilizing cultural humility and considering the needs and values of patients. In addition, she has two years of experience as a child/adolescent psychiatric nurse caring for children and adolescents with a variety of mental illnesses. Annette is a HRSA scholarship recipient, Mary Bleecker Simmons '60 award recipient, member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Her research interests include trauma, substance abuse, personality disorders, psychotic disorders and holistic therapies and cultural humility in the care of ethnic minorities and other vulnerable populations. She presented her research on the Effectiveness of music therapy on trauma symptoms in adults with PTSD at Sigma Theta Tau’s 34th international nursing conference. She spends her free time playing with her cat, reading, attending concerts and traveling.
