- Dr. Anthony Bleyer is a nephrologist based in Winston-Salem, NC, specializing in hypertension, general nephrology, transplant nephrology, glomerular disease, and dialysis. He completed his internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins University and a nephrology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania Health System after graduating from Baylor College of Medicine in 1987. In 1996, In 1995, Dr. Bleyer was referred a family with inherited kidney disease and gout from the mountains of North Carolina. Working with colleagues at Wake Forest, a mutation in the UMOD gene encoding uromodulin was identified as a cause of autosomal dominant tubulointerstitial kidney disease. Dr. Bleyer then began close collaborations with Dr. Stan Kmoch at the Charles University in Prague and was the lead clinical researcher in the identification of mutations in REN, SAA1, NDUFAF6, POLMRT, SEC61A1, and APOA4 as causes of inherited kidney disease. Work with Dr. Lander at the Broad Institute led to identification of mutations in MUC1 as a cause of ADTKD. Dr. Bleyer is a clinical researcher who leads the Rare Inherited Kidney Disease at Wake Forest. Their mission statement is: To help one patient one family at a time. They have been referred over 1400 families for evaluation for ADTKD and have identified approximately 240 families with UMOD mutations and 135 with MUC1 mutations.
Dr. Bleyer was the first to show the relationship between tobacco use and chronic kidney disease. He also identified an increased risk of sudden and cardiac death on Mondays for Monday, Wednesday, Friday hemodialysis patients and Tuesday for Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday hemodialysis patients.
