Summary

  • Dr. Brian A. Peterkin is a licensed Physician Assistant (PA) with a doctoral degree in medical science and a master’s in clinical medical science. Brian has an extensive background in exercise physiology being both a certified strength and conditioning specialist (C.S.C.S.) and ACSM health fitness instructor during his undergraduate education. Currently, his interests include acute inpatient and outpatient management following orthopedic surgery and the long-term care of patients with chronic pain. Brian has been member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, New Jersey State Society of Physician Assistants, and the North American Spine Society.

    Since starting with the New Jersey Spine Specialists in 2008, Brian has worked closely with all surgeons both in the clinic and the operating room setting. He has been an integral part of the practice in outpatient care as well as maintaining medical staff privileges with four major healthcare organizations to service all patient needs. In 2014, Brian had been named “2014 Outstanding Physician Assistant of the Year.” He has completed numerous educational symposiums and advanced training workshops pertaining to orthopedic and neurosurgical related conditions and has worked with non-profit organizations performing medical care in remote communities. Brian has published in top orthopedic and sport medicine journals with most recent work in awareness of metal sensitivity to orthopedic implants. In 2019 Brian received the award for one of the best articles submitted by a PA to the Journal of Joint and Bone Surgery (JBJS). Brian completed his doctoral thesis on metal allergies and is a medical science liaison for the Sensiband Device which allows patients to test themselves for allergies to the metals most commonly used in implantable medical devices.

    Brian is an adjunctive faculty member for Rutgers PA program and a clinical instructor for numerous other PA programs.
