He practiced anatomic and clinical pathology for 35 years, most recently as Chairman of Pathology at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax, VA. He graduated from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1984 and completed his residency in pathology there in 1988. He then completed a research fellowship at the NIH Laboratory of Tumor Virus Biology, where he published notable research on human papillomavirus. More recently he has participated in research on the validation of machine learning in pathology, including work on tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in breast cancer, which has been frequently cited in the field.
