- Graduated with honors from Davidson College and subsequently Duke University Medical School, followed with Residency in Internal Medicine at Vanderbilt University, where I served as Chief Resident before Cardiology Fellowship under former BOG Chair Gottlieb Friesinger, MD, FACC. Joined Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute as an interventional cardiologist where I rose to Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab and then Chief of Cardiology for over 13 years. Now serving as Executive Vice-Chair Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute and President of the Medical Staff of Carolinas Medical Center/Atrium Health and since 2006 Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine & chief liaison for cardiovascular training between Charlotte and Chapel Hill hospital campuses and transitioned in 2024 to Professor of Medicine Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

With my interests and publications in STEMI systems of care I have spoken >250 times nationally and internationally over the past 20 years and as the chief interventional cardiologist for the ACC North Carolina (NC) STEMI/RACE program for a statewide system of care from 2005 to 2015, the ACC/AHA National STEMI Accelerator I and II programs covering over 30 million lives 2011-2020, and now senior adviser for the ACC Global Heart Attack Treatment Initiative (GHATI) enrolling over 10,000 STEMI patients since 2019 in >25 countries worldwide.
