- Dr. Carlos Dostal is a faculty member in the Division of General Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), where he joined after completing his residency in Internal Medicine. He holds both an M.D. and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Illinois, and a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to his medical training, Dr. Dostal worked as a Field Engineer. Originally from South Texas, he is fluent in Spanish.
At UTMB, Dr. Dostal maintains a private clinic practice and serves as a faculty preceptor for internal medicine residents. He is the Director of Clinical and Translational Sciences at the Center for Addiction Sciences and Therapeutics (CAST) and the Medical Director of UTMB’s Internal Medicine Substance Use Disorder Clinics. He also provides inpatient care at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and Jennie Sealy Hospitals. Dr. Dostal is actively engaged in medical education, with a primary focus on teaching addiction medicine. He is currently board eligible in addiction medicine through the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM).
Dr. Dostal’s academic interests include addiction medicine, medical education, disaster and humanitarian medicine, and optimizing human health and performance in remote and challenging environments.
