Summary

  • Dr. Kanaly completed his internship in general surgery and then his residency and chief residency in neurological surgery at Duke University. He was nationally recognized during his residency by receiving the prestigious Preuss Research Award for his neuro-oncology research. Following his training, Dr. Kanaly practiced in Providence, RI and was a Clinical Instructor at Boston University School of Medicine. He received national media attention for being the first surgeon in the region to perform minimally invasive spinal decompressions for lumbar stenosis. He was also the first surgeon in New England to perform two-level artificial disc replacement surgery. Dr. Kanaly subsequently moved his practice full time to Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, MA, establishing the Neurosurgery Center of Southern New England. He serves as Chair of Neurosurgery at Saint Anne’s Hospital and has continued to advance the field of spine surgery by establishing the multidisciplinary Spine Center of Saint Anne’s Hospital. Dr. Kanaly serves as the medical director of the Spine Center and under his leadership, the Spine Center has achieved national recognition for the quality of its spine care through certification by the Joint Commission (JCAHO) and certification as a Blue Cross Blue Distinction Center+ for Spine Surgery. Dr. Kanaly and the Spine Center at Saint Anne’s Hospital achieved international prominence in 2017 as the eighth hospital in the world to perform advanced Excelsius GPS robotic, minimally-invasive spine surgery (and the first in Massachusetts or Rhode Island). In 2019, Dr. Kanaly achieved recognition as the most experienced Excelsius GPS surgeon in the Eastern United States and the third most experienced internationally. He has performed over 500 robotic spine surgeries, has instructed other spine surgeons internationally on this advanced technique, and his research has been presented at international conferences.
