I was trained as a general surgeon but became fascinated by CAM and acupuncture after suffering a repetitive stress injury in my arms. I had a private practice (Chicago Healing Center) but closed that to become the Director of Integrative and Culinary Medicine at SIU SOM. I have expertise in medical education (curriculum design, performance assessment, content delivery) and have over 25 years of experience in adult and medical education. I am interested in and involved with several national and international organizations in medical education and integrative care: I speak nationally and internationally on those topics.
Patients that seek integrative care (complementary/alternative therapy in combination with conventional medicine) tend to be the kind of people who are focused on prevention of disease or those for whom there seems to be no good solution to their complaints or concerns through conventional medicine. Common issues that I treat are: fibromyalgia, IBS/IBD, fatigue, pain (anywhere, any kind, any duration), infertility/perimenopausal sx/dysmenorrhea, HTN, psychiatric concerns (PTSD, depression, anxiety), allergies/respiratory/sinus/asthma, obesity/weight loss, and addiction (smoking, alcohol, other substances of abuse). The goal of integrative medicine is to return the body to homestasis. Therefore, many, many patients "graduate" from my practice and no longer need pharmaceutical support for their health after pursuing this kind of intervention.
