He attended University of Pennsylvania undergrad before receiving his medical degree from Medical College of Ohio, and residency in dermatology at University of Michigan. He was head of dermatology at University of Toledo Medical Center for three years before entering private practice in 1982. He has over 800 medical publications and has authored over 40 book chapters. He has been editor of several journals and as of 2024 remains as editor-in-chief of Bentham's The Open Dermatology Journal and one of several editors of Dermatology Research and Practice. He has six U.S. patents in acne, fungus, and head lice.
