Summary

I am a board certified pediatric hematologist/oncologist with over 50 years of clinical practice, laboratory and clinical research, education, and training. A graduate of Cornell University and Cornell University Medical College, I did my residency and fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The latter was under the mentorship of Drs. Louis Diamond and D I was Chief of Pediatrics at the 36th Tactical Hospital in Germany. I served on the faculties of the University of Rochester-Strong Memorial Hospital, Cornell Medical Center-New York Hospital, Chairman of the Pediatrics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and directed its combined Fellowship Training Program. My initial laboratory research focus was in congenital hemolytic anemias (enzyme deficiencies, hemoglobinopathies and membrane defects) but reflecting the realities of my clinical practice, I joined Childrens Cancer Group and became focused on childhood ALL and other hematologic malignancies. I was vice-chairperson of CCG and director of the ALL BM Reference Laboratory. Significant contributions to ALL included definition of clinical and laboratory prognostic groups, the importance of early response to induction therapy, neuropsychologic adverse effects of therapy, sanctuaries of disease, and lymphoblast morphology. I was on the faculty of Northwestern Medical Center, served as Scientific Director of the Cancer Treatment Research Foundation, and then joined the biotechnology/CRO/pharmaceutical industry, and was VP and Global Therapeutic Area Head of Hem/Onc at PAREXEL. I am now Adjunct Professor Clinical Pediatrics at the University of Utah and Primary Childrens Hospital, engaging in teaching and mentoring. I have authored over 300 scientific articles, books, chapters, and abstracts, most noteworthy of which is senior editor and major contributor to editions 4-7 of Smith's Blood Diseases of Infancy and Childhood. I was the 2nd President of ASPHO.
