  • D. Michael Nelson, M.D., Ph.D., is the Virginia S. Lang Professor and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. in Cell Biology while enrolled in the National Institutes of Health Medical Scientist Training Program. He is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in the sub-specialty of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He has 40 years of clinical experience for an ethnically diverse, high-risk obstetrical population at the Washington University Medical Center and the Barnes-Jewish Hospital of St. Louis. He was awarded the outstanding clinician award by the State of Missouri Maternal, Child and Family Health Coalition, the Distinguished Senior Research Scientist Award from the Society for Reproductive Investigation, and the Samuel Goldstein Teaching Award for the Washington University School of Medicine. In 2018, he received both the Washington University Alumni Distinguished Service Award and the Dr. Neville Grant Outstanding Clinician Award, the latter given to two individuals among the 1500 physicians on staff at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He also received the Marfan's National Foundation " Hero with a Heart" Award, the Virginia S. Lang Professorship in Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1998-2020, and had an education endowment named in his honor, the D. Michael Nelson Education Endowment for Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Nelson retired in June of 2020, after serving as the Interim Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2021-2022.
