He received his medical degree from University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1976, general psychiatry at Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine, and Child and Adolescent psychiatry specialty training at Yale University. He has been in practice since then. He achieved Board Certification in General Psychiatry, and in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. He has served as faculty for four medical schools. While experienced in all aspects of psychiatry, he has special interest in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders (Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder), Autism Spectrum Disorders, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. He has numerous publications including psychiatric journals, chapters in graduate level textbooks, and co-author of a college textbook. He has provided presentations on psychiatry in most of the USA 50 states and in Great Britain, and at national and world conferences with the American Association of Christian Counselors.
