As an academic clinician and investigator, Dr. Short applies a range of neurostimulation modalities—including ECT, TMS, VNS, and DBS—to treat neuropsychiatric disorders, with particular clinical and research emphasis on TMS for treatment-resistant depression, OCD, and tobacco addiction. Over the past two decades at MUSC, he has served as PI, co-investigator, or study psychiatrist on 49 completed or ongoing projects spanning 16 primary investigators, and he has authored or co-authored more than 65 peer-reviewed publications. He trains residents and attending physicians in brain stimulation therapies and is a co-director of perhaps the first brain stimulation fellowship in the United States (one of 14 such fellowships nationally).
