  • Emeran Mayer, MD, is a gastroenterologist based in Los Angeles, specializing in disorders of altered brain gut interactions and chronic visceral pain. He graduated from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich Faculty of Medicine in 1976 and was awarded his MD degree with summa cum laude. He has been a longtime faculty member in the Department of Medicine at UCLA and has extensive experience in the science and practice of complex disorders of altered brain gut microbiome interactions, including IBS, IBD and chronic visceral pain. Mayer has contributed more than 415 notable publications on topics such as brain gut microbiome interactions, the human gut microbiome, irritable bowel syndrome, and dietary impacts on health. He has been involved in several clinical trials investigating visceral sensations, satiety, and pelvic pain. His achievements have been recognized with various honors, including the Janssen Award for Outstanding Achievements in Gastroenterology, the Senior Basic Scientist Award from the International Foundation for Functional GI Disorders and the Distinguished Mentor Award from the American Gastroenterological Association.
