He received his medical degree from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine and has been in practice 29 years.
    He is a fellowship trained movement disorders specialist who is involved in all aspects of care for Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients, including diagnosis, medical treatment, and deep brain stimulation. He is the director of the Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence and the Movement Disorders Division at the University of Iowa, and the director of the Movement Disorders Clinic at the Iowa City VA Health Care System. As a physician-scientist, building on his clinical experience and patient cohort, he has led federally funded projects on understanding functional impairments caused by PD (“Prediction of Driver Safety in PD” - R01 project, NINDS/NIH) and their mitigation “Driver Rehabilitation in PD” - Merit Review award, Department of Veterans Affairs). Funded by another Merit Review award, he conducted a preliminary study to test the tolerability, feasibility, and effect size of aerobic exercise in PD (“Effects of Aerobic Exercise in PD”). Based on successful results from this project, he is continuing his studies on aerobic exercise in PD in a project funded by a recent Merit Review award from the Department of Veterans Affairs: “Long Term Aerobic Exercise to Slow Progression in PD”. . Recently, he has received a grant from the Department of Defense as a partnering PI with Iowa State University and University of Washington to develop a blood biomarker for PD.
