He completed his medical education (MD) and graduate education (PhD, Molecular Biology) in 1987 at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. Dr. Barr pursued residency training in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Pennsylvania and post-doctoral training at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Currently, he serves as a Senior Investigator and Deputy Chief of Pathology at the National Cancer Institute and he is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on oncologic pathology, specifically in genetics and epigenetics of the rhabdomyosarcoma family of soft tissue sarcomas. Notably, Dr. Barr was elected to The American Society for Clinical Investigation in 2001, served as the Senior Associate Editor for the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics from 2015 to 2022, and has served on the Soft Tissue Sarcoma Steering Committee of the Children's Oncology Group since 2000.
