Summary

  • Dr. Gupta received his B.S. (Biological Chemistry) from the University of Chicago in 1996. He received his M.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2002. He then performed his residency in urologic surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center (2002-2008). He continued his training as a fellow in Urologic Oncology at the National Cancer Institute (NIH) in the Urologic Oncology Branch under the guidance of Dr. W. Marston Linehan (2008-2011). In 2011 he was recruited to the Department of Urology by Dr. Robert Flanigan as a fellowship trained urologic oncologist. Dr. Gupta holds a primary appointment in the Department of Urology, and has a joint appointment in the Department of Surgery and the Oncology Institute.

    His primary clinical research interests pertain to bladder, kidney and prostate cancer. Dr. Gupta performs minimally invasive surgeries using the DaVinci Robotic Surgery platform. His clinical interests are to push the cutting edge of technology while optimizing cancer outcomes. He is also interested in the role of targeted therapies either before or after surgery to enhance cancer outcomes.

    Dr. Gupta’s laboratory is located in the oncology institute. He has been named a Dean’s Office Clinical Scholar and splits his time between his clinical responsibilities and his research interests. His laboratory is active in creating pre-clinical models in bladder and kidney cancer to assess the effects of emerging targeted therapies.

    Dr. Gupta has positioned Loyola to be a leader in robotic surgery and cutting edge urologic cancer surgery treatments. He has developed novel robotic approaches to kidney cancer surgery, prostate cancer and bladder cancer surgery. In addition, he has established the first MRI guided prostate fusion biopsy program in Illinois.

    Dr. Gupta is an expert in urologic oncology and robotic surgery and lectures extensively on these subjects at the regional and national level.
