Summary

  • Harold Alan Pincus, M.D. is Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Co-Director of the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research at Columbia University. Dr. Pincus also is a Senior Scientist at the RAND Corporation. Previously he was Director of the RAND-University of Pittsburgh Health Institute and Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh and is an adjunct professor at Weill-Cornell, UCLA and USUHS. He is the National Director of the Health and Aging Policy Fellowship and previously directed national programs for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (Depression in Primary Care), Hartford Foundation (Building Interdisciplinary Geriatric Research Centers) and MacArthur Foundation (Mental Health and Substance Use). Previously, Dr. Pincus was Deputy Medical Director of the American Psychiatric Association and founding director of APA’s Office of Research. Prior to joining APA, he was the Special Assistant to the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health. Among other honors, he has received the Menninger Award by the American College of Physicians, NIMH/APA Vestermark Award, Research Mentorship Award by AACDP and the C. Charles Burlingame Award by the Institute of Living for contributions to research and education in Psychiatry. He has over 500 publications in psychiatry and health and science policy and has led research and training projects totaling over $280 million in external funding.

    Dr. Pincus graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and received his MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Following psychiatry residency at George Washington University Medical Center, Dr. Pincus was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar. As a Clinical Scholar, Dr. Pincus served as a professional staff member of the President’s Commission on Mental Health at the White House and, subsequently, as a congressional fellow in the U.S. House of Representatives.
