Summary

  • I am Professor and Vice Chair of Pathology at Keck School of Medicine of USC. My duties include being Director of the USC Transfusion Medicine Group and Director of Laboratories and Pathology at the Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center. I received my BA from UCLA (graduating summa cum laude and elected to Phi Beta Kappa), my medical degree from the USC School of Medicine (elected to AOA), and I completed my Pathology residency and blood banking/transfusion medicine fellowship at Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center.

I am author or co-author of more than 150 papers, monographs, and books and book chapters, most of which deal with the clinical and laboratory practice of transfusion medicine and I have been active in the California Blood Bank Society (CBBS), the AABB, the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the College of American
Pathologists (CAP), and the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM).

I served as chair of state and national organizations’ committees, including AABB's Clinical Transfusion Medicine Committee, CAP's Transfusion Medicine Resource Committee, ASCP's Council on Transfusion Medicine. I served as president of CBBS, and on the board of directors of the AABB and SABM.

The CBBS and the AABB have recognized me for contributions to the field of transfusion medicine as a recipient of the CBBS 'Owen F. Thomas, MD Award' and the AABB 'Hemphill-Jordan Leadership Award'.

I helped create the Transfusion Medicine Blog 'e-Network Forum' <http://cbbsweb.org/enf/index.php> which was a moderated transfusion medicine BLOG with an international audience.

Most recently, I served on a California Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) Advisory workgroup that focused on Resource Stewardship of blood product utilization.

My wife (Nadine) and I enjoy living in Mar Vista (West Los Angeles), California within a short distance of our two daughters, our daughters’ husbands, and our four fantastic grand kids.
