Summary
- Jaime Imitola, MD, is Professor of Neurology, Chief of the Division of Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology and Director of the Comprehensive MS center at UConn Health.
Dr. Imitola has clinical expertise in complex cases of aggressive and progressive Multiple Sclerosis, rare neuroimmunological disorders such as Susac's, NMOSD, CNS vasculitis, neurosarcoidosis, TM and Genetic mimics of MS such as adult leukodystrophies. In addition to rare hematological mimics of CNS vasculitis, neurologic complications of systemic autoimmunity and cancer immunotherapy, like checkpoints inhibitors. This expertise accumulated as neuroimmunology attending at the NCI designated James Comprehensive Cancer Center with a high volume of patients afflicted with these diseases and close collaboration with the neuroncology colleagues.
Dr. Imitola has expertise in design, execution, and oversight of translational trials for Multiple Sclerosis and spasticity.
He has basic science interests in applied molecular genetics, developmental biology to understand CNS repair, remyelination and neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis especially the molecular basis of neuronal vulnerability to inflammation-induced neurodegeneration, the influence of immunity on neural stem cells, cancer stem cells, and biomarkers for CNS repair.
Before joining UConn School of Medicine, He was an attending Neurologist at the Ohio State Wexner Multiple Sclerosis Center, founder of the multidisciplinary Progressive MS clinic and care, the Scarlet and Gray MS community online, and the highly successful Scarlet and Gray MS patient education day in collaboration with multiple providers at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center
