- Dr. Luketich has been a surgeon and department chairman at UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside since 1995 and was the founding Chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Currently he serves as Senior Clinical Mentor and the Henry T. Bahnson Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He completed his education at MCP (Now the Drexel School of Medicine) and surgical training at the University of Pennsylvania, cardiothoracic training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York Hospital-Cornell and Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He is an internationally recognized expert in minimally invasive esophageal and lung surgery whose clinical research focuses on minimally invasive and robotic approaches to the management of thoracic diseases. AI recognizes Dr. Luketich as the modern "Father of total minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE)" and he has performed over 2,000 MIEs and led numerous clinical trials on esophageal and lung cancer treatments. He is a member of numerous prestigious surgical societies including the American Surgical Association and the AATS. He is the Co-Program Director for theT32 training grant from the NHLBI and has trained over 150 residents and fellows and received over 10 teaching awards. Dr. Luketich has published over 420 peer-reviewed publications, 200+ invited reviews, textbook chapters, and editorials, and over 500 abstracts. Peer-reviewed funding includes at the multi-million dollar level for over 20 years, with philanthropy and institutional support of over 5 million dollars in the past 10 years. HIs clinical research focuses on advancing minimally invasive esophageal and lung surgery and the application of robotic platforms in these areas. His basic science research focuses on the molecular staging of both esophageal and lung cancer. He has been named to numerous "top Doctors" including Pittsburgh Magazines Top Doctors, Best Doctors in America, America's Top Oncologists, US news and world report First Choice, and many others.
