He completed his internship in internal medicine at University of Utah Health from 2000 to 2001 after earning his MD from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1999, along with a PhD in Immunology. He has extensive experience in genomics and medicine, with specific expertise in multimodal clinical trials, molecular phylogenetics, computational biology, and systems biology. During the Human Genome Project, he was instrumental in the development of the pairwise end-sequencing strategy. At the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB), he directed the first team to sequence the genomes of a full pedigree in humans. Subsequently, he led teams to study the genetics of complex diseases by whole-genome sequencing. He serves as Specialty Chief Editor for Frontiers in Genetics: Human and Medical Genomics.
