Summary

  • Dr. Strawn graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2005 and went on to complete his residency in general psychiatry at UC, followed by a clinical fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. His research is centered on anxiety disorders—pinpointing risk factors and pioneering pharmacological treatments for these conditions. Over the past decade, his work has had sustained funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), foundations, PCORI and industry. Notably, he spearheaded the FDA trials that led to the approval of the first and only two medications to treat anxiety disorders in youth.

Strawn’s research is a blend of neuroimaging, pharmacogenetics, and pharmacologic investigations that seek to identify early predictors of treatment response and medication tolerability. His overarching goal is to tailor treatment strategies to individual patients, and this approach has reshaped treatment targets and identified biomarkers of treatment response in anxiety-related conditions. With nearly 230 peer-reviewed publications and an h-index of 52, Dr. Strawn’s work has been cited nearly 10,000 times—1,200 of those citations in the past year alone.

A dedicated mentor, Dr. Strawn has guided dozens of residents and fellows in independent research, earning the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry’s Outstanding Mentor Award on two occasions. In addition to mentoring, he has authored six books, including the best-selling Prescriber’s Guide for Children and Adolescents (Stahl & Strawn). A distinguished fellow of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, he has also earned multiple accolades for his teaching, mentorship, and research contributions. He has been elected to full membership in the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology. Dr. Strawn regularly serves on NIH study sections and is invited to speak at national and international forums, influencing the trajectory of psychiatric care
