Summary
- Dr. Jennifer Young Pierce is a Senior Staff Physician and Professor of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of South Alabama Mitchell Cancer Institute (MCI). She joined MCI in 2017 with national expertise in Human Papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer and currently serves as the Leader of Cancer Prevention and Control as well as an Abraham A. Mitchell Clinical Cancer Research Scholar. She was born and raised in Sumter, South Carolina and went to medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, graduating Valedictorian. She completed her residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital Integrated Residency in Ob/Gyn at Harvard Medical School, and completed her fellowship in Gyn Oncology at the University of Virginia (UVA). She completed her Masters’ in Public Health while at UVA. After completing her fellowship, Dr. Pierce returned to MUSC where she practiced for 8 years. She co-founded and Co-Chaired Cervical Cancer Free South Carolina and served on the state Cancer Control Advisory Committee. She was named a Research All-Star by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and is a GOG Young Investigator Award Winner. She is a core member of the Cervical Cancer Committees of the NRG, the cooperative clinical trials arm of the NCI. She served as the Society for Gynecologic Oncology first representative to the National HPV Roundtable and Alabama state HPV vaccine champion. She was appointed to the Alabama Commission on the Study of Gynecologic Cancers and also serves as on the Medical Advisory Board to the Alabama Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. Her primary focus remains the care of women with gynecologic cancers including radical surgery, chemotherapy, survivorship, and palliative care. In 2021, she was named Gyn Oncology Fellowship Program Director of the brand new MCI Gyn oncology fellowship. She lives with her husband and 2 daughters in Mobile, AL.
