  • Dr. Joanne A. Peebles Wilson is Professor of Medicine in GI at Duke University Medical Center. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with Highest Honors, and Duke University School of Medicine as member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical and President of the Davison Society (medical study body). She did her house staff training at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and completed her Gastroenterology training at the Washington, D.C. Veteran Administration Hospital . She was a faculty member at the University of Michigan for several years prior to coming to Duke University in 1986 as Associate Professor of Medicine-GI with tenure and was promoted to Professor of Medicine-GI in 1995 as only the second woman to reach this rank in the Department of Medicine.
    Dr. Wilson has been active in clinical-academic practice with emphasis on IBS, IBD, colon cancer screening and geriatric medicine. She has been involved in numerous clinical studies and has numerous publications. With Dr. Ken Wilson, they published the first report of the sequencing of the Whipple Bacillus.
    She has been active in patient and physician education, has been honored for student and resident teaching and has been active in medical center and departmental governance. She has had an active role in professional medical organizations and has served as Secretary of the American Gastroenterology Association, the 1st woman and African-American to do so. She was honored as one of the AGA Outstanding Women in Science, as Duke Medical School Distinguished Faculty Awardee, Master Clinician-Teacher Awardee, Career Achievement Award from Department of Medicine and honored with the Joanne A.P. Wilson Annual Lectureship in GI. She was 135th President of the American Clinical and Climatological Association and 1st African American and 4th woman in this medical organization founded in 1884. 2021 UNC Trailblazer Award Recipient
