  • Dr. Johan Suyderhoud is an anesthesiologist based in Winston-Salem, NC. He completed his medical education at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine in 1986, followed by a residency in anesthesiology at Mass General Brigham/Brigham and Women's Hospital from 1987 to 1990. He has served in various academic and leadership roles, including currently as Professor at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist since 2021 where he leads the Perioperative Optimization Clinic and sits on the Advocate Health System executive leadership committee for the system’s Interdisciplinary Perioperative Optimizaiton Process. Prior to this, he was Chairman of Anesthesiology at Saint Luke’s Hospital/St Lukes Health Care Physician Group and Chairman of Anesthesiology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, from 2015 to 2021, and before that as Professor and Vice Chairman at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital from 1990 to 2015. Dr. Suyderhoud clinical expertise lies in critical care medicine, transplant anesthesiology, and cardiac anesthesiology, both adult as well as pediatrics. He served as Chair for Blood Utilization Committee where he led the processes that allowed MGUH to achieve designation as the first hospital to be awarded TJC certification for Patient Blood Management. He was Chair of Pharmacy and Therapeutics for both MH GUH as well as for the entire MedStar system, and the Perioperative Safety Officer for MH GUH. He has contributed to medical literature with numerous publications, and has received the AOA honor in 1985.
