Summary

  • Dr. Rozel started his experience in emergency mental health as a suicide hotline volunteer more than 30 years ago. Over his career he has worked locally and nationally to improve crisis services for patients and communities and has been involved in a number of efforts to improve the interface between the legal and mental health systems. He has been the medical director of resolve Crisis Services of UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital since 2010 and is a Past President of the American Association for Emergency Psychiatry. Reflecting his interest in bridging systems and programs for addressing complex social problems, he works extensively on issues related to violence and firearm injury prevention in a variety of settings. He is a Professor of Psychiatry and Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Pittsburgh. He has been named a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the Behavioral Health Professional of the Year by Crisis Intervention Teams International, as an Exemplary Psychiatrist of the Year by the National Alliance for Mental Illness, and is the only psychiatrist ever to receive the Ralph C. Wilde Leadership Award from the Allegheny County Medical Society. In 2022, he became the first psychiatrist recognized with honorary membership in the American College of Emergency Physicians. He recently received competitive grant funding to develop threat management programs for Western Pennsylvania through the US Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Prevention Programs & Partnerships.
