Summary

  • I am a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Texas who received my MD from Baylor College of Medicine, where I also served as Chief Resident in Neurology. My clinical practice focuses on stroke and the critical care of patients with vascular-neurological diseases.

I am the current Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs for the Houston Methodist Department of Neurology, the Director of the Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center at Houston Methodist Hospital, the largest Comprehensive Stroke Center in the Southwest United States, and the Elkins Family Distinguished Centennial Clinical Academic Scholar in Neurology. Since joining the faculty of the Methodist Neurological Institute, I have served a number of administrative roles, including Deputy Chief of Neurology, Chair of Quality Improvement, Director of the Vascular Neurology Fellowship, Asst Residency Program Director, Director of the Cerebral Blood Flow Lab, and Medical Director of the Neurology Clinic. As a clinician, my clinical practice includes the care of over 1500 unique patients in the hospital and clinic per year.

My academic interests include the study of advanced diagnostic techniques for evaluation of stroke, cerebral hemodynamics, treatments for stroke in the young, and procedures for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. In the last 15 years, I have participated in over 120 research studies as an investigator, and am currently a lead investigator (PI, co-PI, or Neurology PI) in 22 ongoing research studies in stroke, cardiovascular disease, and neurological rehabilitation, as well as a national PI for a post-approval study of the Gore Septal Occluder for PFO closure and stroke risk reduction. My laboratory has been well funded by government and industry sources and focuses on advanced diagnostics in stroke triage and care.

I am an Associate Professor of Neurology at the Methodist Institute of Academic Medicine and serve as a reviewer for journals including Stroke, Neurology, and a grant reviewer for NIH/NINDS.
