Becerra is a retired Commissioned Officer of the U.S. Public Health Service, board-certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, who worked in the fields of science, medicine and mathematical epidemiology at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (1985-2014), after having served as a medical officer with the National Health Service Corps (1979-1983). Dr. Becerra holds an adjunct academic appointment as Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Puerto Rico Graduate School of Public Health.
