Summary

  • I am a board certified anesthesiologist who has been devoted to interventional pain management for my entire career since becoming a board-certified in both anesthesiology and pain medicine. After serving as chairman of pain medicine for a very short three years at University of Kentucky where I was honored to receive such a prestigious position so quickly after training, I moved on to private practice in Grand Rapids Michigan where I have practiced exclusive 100% interventional pain medicine since 1995 to present. In 2009 I opened the Javery Pain Institute, A nearly 50,000 square-foot multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary center for the diagnosis and treatment of all chronic pain syndromes. I am joined by some of the best interventional pain specialists in the country and certainly the best staff. We offer the full length and breath of interventional pain techniques combined with interdisciplinary uses of, physical therapy, psychotherapy/behavioral therapy treatments and medication management with our efforts always intended to reducing pain and improving function of our patients and at he same time reducing or eliminating the need and/dose of any opiates our patients come to us on.
Myself and my colleagues emphasize what we call the "procebo" effect in all of our patient treatments (opposite of nocebo effect). Compassion and empathy combined with use of the most advanced Interventional techniques and interdisciplinary care. My interest primary lies in my hypothesis that when patients receive an overall positive experience associated with their care that they improve significantly better than the same techniques applied in a "non procebo" environment. (Nocebo effect). As Dr Manchikanti et al have published many times, this is the reason why most medical studies suffer when dealing with subjective measurements like "pain". We must include the inclusion of the nocebo and "provebo" effect in both our studies and our practice.
