Psychiatry Memphis, TN

Professor and Vice Chair, Psychiatry, University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine

  • I am currently Professor and Vice-Chair of Psychiatry at the University of Tennessee in Memphis after being effected by Hurricane Katrina where I had been a Professor of Psychiatry at LSU for many years. I have been involved in Geriatric Psychiatry, minority interests, and medical education throughout my career.
    Recent involvements or publications:
    Disaster Psychiatry (after Hurricane Katrina)
I co-Chaired the AAGP Task Force on Disaster Response in the Elderly. The TF report in the AJGP had the highest number of hits of any article in this this top rated journal. I also contributed to the Stoddard , text on Disaster Psychiatry, a book that won the British Medical Association book award.
    Geriatric Education:
I recently chaired a committee at UT to try to define and mainstream Geriatric education into the general medical student curriculum.
Our progtam, that I direct, received commendation for compliance from ABPN for our Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship at our last reaccreditation.
I published a highly regarded pocket handbook called Geriatric Psychiatry Basics through Norton press.
I serve as Director of Geriatric Psychiatry at UT and our partner Tenet hospital, St. Francis as we try to expand services in the area.
    Minority Issues:
I had chaired several APA groups on Minority Elderly and now serve on its Council on Minority and Underserved. One thing I am most pleased by is the Curriculum Guide to Cultural Competence that one of our committees completed for the APA and AAGP, although it received little attention.
I am member of the Neuroscience Center and am working with investigators on a new technology called magnetoencephalography to map brain circuits in psychiatric illness and a translational project involving BDNF in depression.
