She completed her Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism fellowship in 2005 at Boston University Medical Center following her residency in Internal Medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital from 1999 - 2003. She has numerous published works relating to diabetes, metabolism. Dr. McDonnell's clinical research area is health outcomes and implementation of scalable specialty-level diabetes care delivery services in acute and ambulatory settings, with a focus on designing and testing care models for marginalized patient populations with diabetes. She has several ongoing research efforts with local, regional and national collaborators in the areas of population science and pragmatic clinical trials. Dr. McDonnell has served on several national and international guideline committees related to diabetes care both in the inpatient and ambulatory settings, including management of perioperative glucose in the setting of cardiothoracic surgery, the pharmacological management of obesity, the care of the older adult with diabetes, and inpatient diabetes management. She also just completed her three-year term as Chair of the Endocrine Society Clinical Guidelines committee. Dr. McDonnell currently serves as the Chair of the guideline development panel for the update of the pharmacological management of obesity guideline for the Endocrine Society.
