  • Dr. Mark Bates is a distinguished clinician, academic, inventor, and entrepreneur. He founded one of the first multidisciplinary vascular centers in the U.S. (CAMC/WVU Vascular Center of Excellence) and has founded, led or served as Core Faculty in multiple fellowship programs across vascular medicine, surgery, and cardiology. With over 10,000 procedures performed and cases proctored in 8 countries, he has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and 20 textbook chapters. His contributions have been featured at leading international conferences. He is a recipient of the AHA Heart of Gold Award and the VIVA “LIVE” Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2021, CAMC established the Mark C. Bates, MD Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Research in his honor. He is also an elected member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He is a prolific innovator, holds 60+ U.S. patents spanning embolic protection, gene therapy, regenerative medicine, nanotechnology, stents, drug delivery, and more. His technologies have led to multiple acquisitions and clinical translation.
