Summary

  • Dr. Brecher earned a Bachelors degree in Chemistry from Emory University in 1978 and a Medical degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine in 1982. His postgraduate training included a surgical internship and a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Chicago followed by a fellowship in transfusion medicine/blood banking at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN). From 1988 until 1992 he was a staff physician with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He was on faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1992-2009 where he was a Full Professor and Vice-Chair for Clinical Services for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Chair of the McLendon Clinical Laboratories. In March of 2009, he became the Chief Medical Officer and a Senior Vice President for Laboratory Corporation of America. In October 2017 he stepped down as Chief Medical Officer but continued as a SVP until June 2018.

    Dr. Brecher has broad interests and has published 180+ scientific articles, editorials, commentaries and letters, 35 book chapters and 21 books (including being chief editor of the American Association of Blood Banks Technical Manual 14th and 15th editions– one of the most referenced sources of information in blood banking and transfusion medicine). His work has been published in a wide variety of journals including the NEJM, The Lancet and Mayo Clinic Proceedings. He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Transfusion and was an associate editor of the Journal of Clinical Apheresis.

    He is a past chair of the DHHS Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability and a past president of the American Society for Apheresis. He has received multiple awards including the American Society for Apheresis Lecturer's award (2010), the Presidential award (2011) and the Morrison Memorial Lecture Award (2016) and the Tibby Greenwalt Award (AABB 2020). He retired in 2018 and is an Emeritus Professor at UNC.
