  • Mark S. Courey, MD, is Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Division Chief of Laryngology, Director of the Laryngology Fellowship Program and Vice Chair of Quality for the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Mount Sinai Health System. He is also Director of the Grabscheid Voice and Swallowing Center of Mount Sinai.

    Dr. Courey is nationally and internationally known for his leadership and skills in the clinical management of patients with airway, voice, and swallowing disorders. He pioneered the development of interdisciplinary team management for performance voice users and extended the success with this experience into the management of all patients with voice and swallowing disorders.

    Dr. Courey's clinical interests include the management patients with difficulties in performance and professional voice. He is a leader in developing standards of voice care (behavioral and surgical) for transgender patients and has one of the largest transgender voice practices in the US. He performs thyroid cartilage reduction (tracheal shave), pitch alteration surgery (Wendler glottoplasty) and is a member of WPATH. Dr. Courey has extensive experience in the management of patients with unilateral and bilateral vocal fold paralysis. He has been an NIH funded researcher for the management of patients with Spasmodic Dysphonia and has developed innovative in-office methods, such as SEES, for the evaluation of patients with difficulty swallowing from head and neck cancer and neurological disorders.

    Dr. Courey sees patients at both The Mount Sinai Hospital and at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai.

    Dr. Courey developed an innovative in-office technique for the objective evaluation of swallowing to be used by otolaryngologists and SLP's.
