Summary

  • I am Chief Medical Officer for the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH). I obtained a master's of public health in Health Care Organization and Policy from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1995. I studied Lean and Six Sigma at Villanova University from 2010-2011. I am a board certified physician in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine through the American Board of Preventive Medicine. I provided primary care in rural Alabama for 11 years prior to deciding to focus on health policy and administration. I served as State Epidemiologist and Assistant State Health Officer for Disease Control and Prevention prior to my promotion to Chief Medical Officer in September 2016. Prior to public health I was Medical Director and Deputy Commissioner of Clinical Standards and Quality for the Alabama Medicaid Agency in addition to serving in several other roles during my fourteen years with the Alabama Medicaid Agency.

I am a member of the National Academy of State Health Policy, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists, the American Public Health Association, the Alabama Public Health Association, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, the American Medical Association, and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama.

I have had the pleasure of making numerous presentations on the state and national level to a wide range of participants including provider associations, physicians, patients, consumers, national policy makers and leaders, advocacy groups, funding entities and other state and national leaders. As an advocate for access to oral health care services, I had an opportunity to testify before the Domestic Policy Subcommittee on Oversight and Government Reform on October 7, 2009.

I am very interested in policy and programs to address the impact of climate change on health and populations and I am currently working to address barriers to immunizations on the national and state level.
