  • Dr. Matthew Harting is an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatric Surgery. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery, pediatric surgery and surgical critical care. A Texas native, Dr. Harting grew up in the Austin area and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin in the Dean’s Scholars Honors program in the College of Natural Sciences. He received his medical degree, as well as a master of science in clinical research, from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, and completed his surgical residency at the University of Michigan. During his surgical training, he completed an NIH T32 and T15 sponsored clinical, translational, and basic science research fellowship in adult stem cell therapies and trauma. An additional post-graduate fellowship was completed in Pediatric Surgery at the University of Washington Seattle Children’s Hospital and he completed a Surgical Critical Care fellowship at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

    Dr. Harting’s clinical interests include congenital and acquired thoracic disease, including pulmonary, diaphragmatic, and esophageal disease. He has particular interest in patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernias. He also has interest in minimally invasive surgery and extracorporeal life support (ELS or ECMO).

    Dr. Harting is a clinical and basic-translational scientist with interests in pulmonary disease and stem cell biology. His primary research is focused on congenital diaphragmatic hernia and the concomitant pulmonary pathophysiology. He is investigating novel, cell-based therapies as treatment strategies for congenital pulmonary disease. Additionally, he is involved in the Center for Surgical Trials and Evidence Based Practice.
