Summary
- I received my undergraduate degree in Genetics from the University of California at Berkeley. After completing medical school at the University of Southern California, I moved to Colorado for residency training programs in Internal Medicine and Clinical Genetics. In 2005 I completed a PhD degree from the University of Colorado Denver for work related to the genetic basis of dilated cardiomyopathy.
Clinically, I direct the Adult Medical Genetics clinic that serves adults and families with genetic conditions in the Denver and Rocky Mountain region. The clinic services include genetic diagnosis, testing, and counseling. Additionally, the clinic serves as a regional hub for recruitment of patients with rare genetic diseases as well as for clinical trials in genetic diseases where novel therapies are now coming online in the trial arena. I direct our adult metabolic disease service where where we follow over 100 adult patients with various lysosomal and metabolic conditions (Fabry, Gaucher, Pompe, Hypophosphatasia, mucopolysaccharidoses, etc.)
My research laboratory studies inherited cardiomyopathies, major causes of heart failure and heart transplantation. Our work includes genetic, cell-based, model organism, and bioengineering approaches. We are also involved in clinical trials for rare diseases. In 2014, I became Associate Director of Personalized Medicine within the newly minted Biomedical Informatics and Personalized Medicine Center. The Center is designed to stimulate and enable translational research that promotes the goals of personalized medicine (also referred to as ‘precision medicine’). My research includes rare disease clinical trials (gene therapy and others) and I co-Direct our NORD Rare Disease Center of Excellence. As an educator, I co-directed the year I Molecules to Medicine Block in the Medical school for 13 years, was an associate track director in the Clinical Science PhD Program, and am currently co-director of the BA/BS-MD pathway program.
