She completed her residency in anesthesiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital following an internship at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. She is Associate Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and until recently, the Distinguished Scholar of Quality & Safety for the Dept of Anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). She served as the Director of Anesthesia Quality & Safety for the entire Mass General Brigham (MGB) Enterprise, which consists of MGH, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, three specialty hospitals and seven community hospitals.
Dr. Pian-Smith’s research, funded by the Foundation for Anesthesia Education & Research (FAER) and the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF) has focused on “speaking up”, to improve education, enhance the role and responsibility of all members of care teams, and support safety culture. She was Principal Investigator of an APSF-supported study of “trust” between surgeons and anesthesiologists, seeking to identify ways in which relationships between team members affect patient outcomes and worker fulfillment. She has advanced fellowship training in medical education and patient safety leadership, has published articles and books, and lectures internationally about anesthesiology, medical education, simulation, safety culture and patient safety.
Dr. Pian-Smith serves on the Board of Directors of FAER and APSF. She is a Past President of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP).
