  • Melissa Alvarez-Downing, MD, FACS, FASCRS, is a colorectal surgeon who received a bachelor of science in chemistry from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. She was awarded her medical degree from The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 2005, and completed a general surgery residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. She went on to pursue a clinical research fellowship in surgical oncology at the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, in Bethesda, Maryland. She then completed a clinical fellowship in colorectal surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston, Florida. She is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and New York Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, as well as a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and National Hispanic Medical Association.

    Dr. Alvarez-Downing has specific interests in laparoscopic surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, fecal incontinence and other disorders of the colon and rectum.

    She is fluent in Spanish and her practice location is at University Hospital, Doctors Office Center, 7th floor, Suite 7100.
