  • Michael "Moshe" J. Akerman, MD, FACP, FRCPE, FCCP is the Director of Medical Education and the Director of the Internal Medicine Continuity Clinics for the New York Medical College GME Program at St. Mary’s General Hospital and St. Clare’s Health and the Director of Medical Education. A veteran clinician and core academic facilty with over 30 years of experience in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, Dr. Akerman has dedicated his career to clinical excellence and the advancement of medical education.

    From 1989 to 2014, Dr. Akerman founded and directed the asthma programs at Kings County Hospital, SUNY Downstate, and Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn. Under his leadership, these programs earned prestigious national recognition, including major awards and citations from the EPA and the NIH National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP).

    In addition to his current educational leadership roles, he previously served for 4 years as a Division Chief at Montefiore Nyack Hospital and at Highland Medical PC. Dr. Akerman is an accomplished researcher with published work focused on COVID-19, asthma management, and the clinical utility of the history and physical exam.



    Education & Honors

    Dr. Akerman earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science from the City College of New York. His contributions to the field have been recognized through numerous international honors, and grants including:
    Fellowship: Elected to the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCPE) in 2024.
    Environmental Leadership: NAEPP National Environmental Leadership Award in Asthma Management 2010-2012.
    Clinical Safety: Patient Safety Award Champion, Woodhull Medical Center. 2012
