Summary
- My clinical practice is centered on minimally invasive foregut surgery, with expertise in the treatment of GERD, hiatal and diaphragmatic hernias, achalasia, gastroparesis, esophageal diverticula, and vascular compression syndromes such as SMA syndrome and median arcuate ligament syndrome. I have pioneered the use of robotic surgery and therapeutic flexible endoscopy in Missouri, including performing the state's first robotic general surgery procedures and per oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM). As a result, we have built one of the largest and most advanced foregut surgery practices in the country. In my role as Director of Robotic Surgery for BJC HealthCare, I lead system-wide initiatives to standardize robotic credentialing, training, and technology acquisition, improving patient safety and efficiency. I also serve as Director of the Washington University Institute for Surgical Education (WISE), overseeing robotic and minimally invasive surgery training, as well as two surgical fellowships. A past President of the Association for Surgical Education, I have helped drive national efforts to implement competency-based education and simulation-based training. My research focuses on surgical education, robotic surgery outcomes, and foregut disease management, and I have secured over $7 million in funding while publishing extensively in high-impact journals. I currently serve as co-chair of the Independent Committee for Graduate Surgical Education, a national task force redesigning the accreditation process for surgical training.
