  • Dr. Schweitzer is Associate Professor of Surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. He is Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Obesity Surgery and Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee for the Fellowship Council and previously served as the chair of the accreditation committee. Since 2006, Dr. Schweitzer has been a site inspector for the Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Schweitzer received his medical degree from the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery at Case Western Reserve University Medical School and was Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia and Georgetown University before his current appointment at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Schweitzer is responsible for creating the laparoscopic bariatric surgery programs at each of these institutions. He is past chair of the membership committee for the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He currently serves on the research committee for ASMBS and the legislative committee for Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. Dr. Schweitzer was instrumental in helping pass legislation for the present law covering morbid obesity surgery in the state of Maryland. Dr. Schweitzer has authored/co-authored more than 100 scientific papers, editorials, textbook chapters, abstracts, and video productions. He has been an invited speaker for more than 60 regional, national and international lectures. He currently serves on the editorial boards of SOARD and Bariatric Times. Dr. Schweitzer is currently an investigator on an NIH-funded study looking at the mechanisms of sleep apnea in severe obesity and a NIDDK-funded study that examines improving diabetes through lifestyle or surgery.
