Summary

  • At the young age of 17, I asked myself probably the most formative question I have ever asked before, or since, "what is the greatest human need?" My answer then was "to be needed".
Determining the answer to this question has led to where I am today. I decided that if I became a nurse, I would always be needed, and 25 years of clinical practice later, I am pleased to say I have never regretted choosing a life of service.
Since I accepted the call to preach in 2009 - my understanding of this great human need has only deepened. Now, I recognize that the most correct answer to the question "what is the greatest human need" is this: a person needs to find God's will for their life and then spend the rest of their life fulfilling it. In today's climate, this calling is often misinterpreted as being narrow-minded and judgmental, but in reality, when led by the Lord, it is a calling to do more than just be successful clinically and professionally. It is a calling to be a successful neighbor. If the greatest two commandments are to 1) Love the Lord thy God with everything you have, and 2) Love thy neighbor as thyself, then there is no greater definition of success than for someone to say at your funeral, "this man, this one truly LOVED his neighbor".

In practice, my greatest clinical success is when I help a patient understand that their physical, emotional and spiritual pain is normal, and the treatment is not always to remove it. Many times, the most success treatment of pain is the presence of life IN SPITE of it.
