Summary

  • Studies at Albany Medical Center Otolaryngology:

    1) Title of Research Protocol: Sleep Study in Patients with Head and Neck Cancer

Sleep Apnea is a relatively common medical condition that affects many people within the general population in the United States. Sleep Apnea is characterized by reduced airflow or shortness of breath, which can lead to poor quality of sleep and increased risk of health challenges due in part to the body’s reaction to disrupted sleep and reduced oxygen levels. Recent studies have shown significantly higher rates of sleep apnea in patients with head and neck cancer. Furthermore, those who underwent chemoradiation for head and neck cancer appeared to have an even greater risk for developing sleep apnea, compared to the general population. Patients with sleep apnea often experience problems such as daytime tiredness and may experience a wide range of cardiovascular conditions, which can greatly affect a patient’s overall health and well-being.
It is our goal with this research study to analyze the onset of sleep apnea in patients with head and neck cancer who are receiving chemoradiation.
