  • Peter Kahrilas, MD, is a gastroenterologist based in Chicago, IL, with subspecialties in esophagus disease and gastrointestinal functional and motility disorders. He completed his fellowship in gastroenterology at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University and the Medical College of Wisconsin, following his residency in internal medicine at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Kahrilas earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester. He is a professor emeritus at Northwestern University where he has been since 1986. Dr. Kahrilas has contributed to more than 500 original publications, including works in NEJM, JAMA, Gastroenterology, Gut, and the American Journal of Physiology. He has been elected to both the American Society of Clinical Investigation and The American Association of Physicians. He was the recipient of the Beaumont Award for lifetime achievement in Gastroenterology from the American Gastroenterological Society in 2020 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Foregut Society in 2025.
