  • Richard Schatz, MD, is a Cardiologist specializing in Interventional Cardiology and is currently retired. Best known as the inventor of the first coronary stent, his education includes a residency in Internal Medicine at Letterman Army Medical Center and fellowship in Cardiology at Brooke Army Medical Center, in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Schatz is experienced in several key areas including, cardiac catheterization, percutaneous coronary intervention, and stem cell treatment of a variety of cardiac conditions. He has made significant contributions to cardiology, as showcased by his numerous publications in various medical journals. Dr. Schatz has also been involved in clinical trials focusing on different aspects of interventional cardiology and cellular regeneration. He has received many honors including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Duke University, induction into the National Academy of Inventors, recipient of the Russ Prize for biomedical engineering and Induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. His work with Dr Julio Palmaz is on permanent display in the Smithsonian Museum of American History.
