Summary

  • I started in rural family medicine with a diverse practice. Work include doing appendectomies and cesarean sections. I set closed fractures, did anesthesia, delivered babies and managed an emergency room. Patients were all ages. I also dealt with psychotics, rape victims, drunks and incarcerated prisoners. In those seven years I obtained two masters degrees in emergency medicine and primary care medicine (MPraxMed, MFGP).
Next I trained for four years in anesthesiology and intensive care. I obtained a board equivalent degree (FCA) and a diploma in anesthesiology (DA). I taught for one year as a university consultant before entering private practice performing my own anesthetics (not supervising). My practice was diverse but included lots of general, vascular, gynecologic-obstetric, and intestinal surgery, as well as neonates. I pioneered regional anesthesia and acute pain services in my hospitals. I became the state anesthesia society chairman and founded a national regional anesthesia society. I became a conference organiser and academic director of two annual meetings with 300 delegates each, and monthly regional anesthesia workshops. I identified many lecturers and mentored them. I attended three international anesthesia conferences per year. I won lecture invitations to universities, and conferences around the country, as well as international. I collaborated with veterinary anesthesiologists in advancing veterinary regional anesthesia nationally and internationally. I wrote the introduction to the first veterinary textbook in regional anesthesia.
In 2004 I accepted an invitation to join the University of Iowa. I introduced ultrasound guided regional anesthesia. I won promotion to full professor in 2012.
Presently I write, produce videos, and publish scientifically in educational entrepreneurial projects. I give medical expert opinions. I write adult fiction, and illustrate and write children’s books. I accept lecture invitations.
